A short doc about how I have set up a LinkSys PowerLine network in my apartment that lets me tap internet from any electrical outlet in any room. I use two LinkSys PLE200 adapters, bought together as a kit containing two adapters and two Ethernet cables (PLK200). I get a LAN speed of about 70 Mbits/sec when copying files between my two computers, that's without the overhead and in a Vista-only LAN. With a mixed XP/Vista LAN, maximum speed decreases to about 50 Mbit/s. LinkSys claims a maximum of 85 Mbits/sec with these adapters. Speed can be improved by connecting directly to outlets, ie, without an extension cord. But since my ADSL speed is just a couple of Mbits/sec, I don't worry about that for now. A warning: these adapters do not require any setup, they work out of the box. However, it is important that you change the password in both adapters from the factory-default password. Otherwise, people in adjacent apartments may be able to eavesdrop on your network traffic. The password has to be the same in adapters that are meant to form a single local network. By installing multiple adapters with different sets of passwords, you can create multiple networks that don't interfere with each other although they use the same hard wiring. The password can be changed with the configuration software that comes with the package. Be sure to run the software as administrator when you're working with Windows Vista. Also see reviews.cnet.com
